I fish mostly the Berkshire/Oxfordshire and Avon rivers, so if anyone wants a chat, here's your chance.. Andy If only Grayling grew to double figures..

Posts: 1 07/10/2007 07:57:10	Hi Goshawk here, from the Forest of Dean, West Gloucestershire. I,m a newcomer to grayling, having only caught my first few this February at the grand age of 40 ! That was from the River Monnow, near Monmouth. They,re also present in some of the streamier areas of my other local river, the lower Wye. I intend to have a good go for them this autumn and winter on the float and maggots, although I,ll leave it until it gets a bit cooler, and the barbel shut up shop a bit ! Good luck, GH.

I wished I had taken my trotting gear on the last outing, and if all goes well I will take my young gun Cameron aged 5 trotting in the next week with said instant BBQ and Camera. Posts: 18 27/12/2008 19:54:52	Maelor is fishing great with the pin at the moment had 18 on the 10th and 15 on the 21st river level was about 900 both times with majority coming to corn. "nd visit manage to bump ito some bigger fish in the 35-40 cms bracket

Posts: 17 31/12/2008 19:18:35	Berkshire Lambourne is in good condition of late, An early start resulted in a dozen ladies, One, a particularly nice size for the venue, and a suprise Roach, all on trotted red single to a 20. A new batch of handmade sticks were a joy to use. Outlook looks to continue with low temperatures and a very clear river. Jonathan, thanks for the reply, Great to be out on the river isn't it, even if we do have it to ourselves!!! Hope to travel west into Avon soon, Wishing all us trotters a very Happy and Successful New year. If only Grayling grew to double figures..

Posts: 7 31/12/2008 20:29:24	Hi well then at 50 something I have recently caught my first grayling at around 1lb. I caught this lovely fish by accident whilst showing the son in law some fly casting. I have fished for over 40 years 30 on the fly and have missed this side of the sport. I remember as a child watching Jack Hargreaves on out of town catching grayling probably on the test and thinking I would love to try that but alas i never did. So here I am a convert and hopefuly some of you will point me in the direction of the grayling and how to catch this beautiful fish.

Posts: 18 01/01/2009 00:55:21	Andy, Its a joy to have the river to yourself especially on my home river on the ribble unfortunately the grayling are a bit scarce this year but been catching some fin and scale perfect chub 18-19 inch up to 3.5lbs which dont half go well on the pin for the first 3 or 4 runs then come in like a big wet sock! Here's to 2009 tight lines to all!

Posts: 210 01/01/2009 13:19:27	Hi....Glad there are other fishermen on here that enjoy Trotting the same as I do...... One of the other reasons I Trot is. I'm getting on in years and it saves me wading in the icy cold river in winter....The rest of the year. Its fly fishing for Trout and Salmon on the Welsh Dee. As Graylinghunter quite rightly said I fished for an hour or two just over a week ago with my Trotting gear and didn't catch anything...... One of the reasons I believe is I was trying out a new self cocking float with a wire stem that I had made and I didn't have enough shot on the cast to get the bait down fast enough to the fish in the fast flowing river.Or the fish just weren't there.... Well thats my excuse anyway..... With a bit of luck I may learn a few things from the more experienced Trotters on here.

Posts: 17 03/01/2009 16:54:29	Hi Jad, I don't favour self cockers myself, main reason is you just don't know if the bait is getting down to the fish. A good stick is my favourite, fished shirt button style and most importantly just over shotted so it sinks under the shotting weight. Held back on the pin, it rides just a blimp in the surface, bites are very easy to see/feel when used this way.. Just returned from an Hour and a half, that's all I could stand, Very cold river, frozen rings, and hands like tree stumps, Not conclusive to effective trotting!! Did catch though using the method described, 5 lively ladies to single maggot on a 22. Looking forward to a hot bath and a Dram or three!!! Have fun guys, Wish I lived nearer the Dee,,,, Andy If only Grayling grew to double figures..

Posts: 17 23/01/2009 13:57:45	Hi Guys, Just returned from a short but sweet session on the local Lambourne, Bright conditions, just a tint of colour on a rising river Very pleasant in the sunshine, although the breeze was a tad chilly Even more pleasent when the float dipped positively as the bait entered the ladies lair Total bag was 14 fish, 12 Grayling and 2 Dace. In all a very enjoyable short, spur of the moment decision trip south. Hope Others are having fun too.. Come on Guys, share it!!! Andy If only Grayling grew to double figures..

At least you have got out I am considering getting the beachcasters out for a couple of hours due to the heavy rainfall over the last week. The grayling comp has been but back a week so i need to do something. Thanks for the reply by the way, I'll look forward with anticipation to meeting up later in the year, weather permitting!!! Perhaps we'll organise that nearer the time. I hope to grab a couple of hours tomorrow morning, that's if I can source some bait... Which makes me think its high time I learnt how to fish with the fly. Can you suggest a suitable book that I would find usefull? ...I have a 7ft Brook type rod rated 3-4 and reel which would be ideal for the small rivers and streams I fish, but no line or flies.Its advice on methods and fly choice that's lacking.. Posts: 17 30/01/2009 18:34:22	After sourcing some bait, I had the most pleasant morning on my favourite chalk-stream... Only slightly up, in fine condition, I hastily set up the tackle. Third trot through resulted in a small brown, Then a Grayling, easily reconised by its rapid gyrating felt through the rod. I worked down river wading in to get the best position. I reached a swim that just cried out to be trotted, The float reaching that precise spot when you just know the bite will happen, sure enough , It was Fish On!! Feeling somewhat different, much more solid, deeper, heavier than the others, I expected a chub, but no, it was a rather special Grayling. She measured 32cms from nose to fork, My best fish from this venue in 2 years. Next trot through the coloured water from my wading antics resulted in a "surprise" roach of a decent size Total bag, 4 Brownies, 8 Grayling and 1 Roach Happy Days in Gloomy times!!
